Senpai Freya – Junior Rep

Senpai Freya

Hi! My name is Senpai Freya and I’m 14 years old. I got my black belt in December of 2015 so at the time of writing this I’ve had it for just over a year.

I started training at MSK when I was about 6 years old with my parents and older sister. We all stopped, except my dad, after deciding it wasn’t for us. But after about a year of my Dad nagging me, I came back “just to shut him up”. Long story short, I’m still with MSK, still learning and still loving it.

I feel like one of the most important things MSK has given me is so many different opportunities. We’ve been on holiday to Spain, where we did a very hot and eye-opening training session with a World Championship winning Muay Thai kick boxer called Eva Maria Naranjo.

Another experience MSK has given me us Tournaments. I’ve gone to a few tournaments and I’ve been lucky enough to win a few medals, I’ve not been so lucky other times! But I think that competing in a tournament (or just watching) opens your eyes to the kind of standard needed to compete. I feel my kata has really evolved since my first tournament, showing the benefit that one can do to you. If you’re thinking about a tournament, just do it, no matter how daunting it may seem. I guarantee you’ll be glad you did it!

And finally, MSK has taught me how to become a leader and through this, I’ve made friends. Being the youngest black belt, senpai (an assistant to the teacher) and the Club’s Junior Representative, I’ve gotten to help other Sensei’s and learn for myself. If I didn’t train at MSK, I wouldn’t have met one of my best friends and other people that I call my family.

A famous quote that I said a few years ago is “MSK is my second home” and although very cheesy, it’s very true and I wouldn’t change my favorite hobby for anything.
