Brazilian jiu Jitsu classes in Eastbourne

BJJ aka Brazilian jiu Jitsu is one of the most popular combat sports today, with it continuously becoming one of the fastest growing combat sports in the world. That’s why here at MSK School of martial arts in Eastbourne, we’ve teamed up with Tony Ferreira to offer BJJ classes to all our students and others.

Tony has trained around the world, taught in multiple locations, competed in different countries and all of these accumulated skills, experiences and knowledge is brought right back here to YOU at MSK School of martial arts.

We run two classes every week in Eastbourne, East Sussex for Brazilian jiu Jitsu and these are: 

Mondays at 7-8:15pm & Wednesdays 6:45-7:45pm

Brazilian jiu Jitsu origins and benefits

Generally, there are two different types of Jiujitsu. They are Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and Japanese jujutsu. Over the years, many people across the world have been guilty of confusing the two martial arts to mean the same thing – this is mostly because the two martial arts have the same name; “Jiujitsu”.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu was initially developed in the 1926 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught jiu-jitsu by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda who himself mastered his ground fighting while interacting with Taro Miyake (Tanabe student), Sadakazu Uyenishi (Handa, Tanabe) and Yukio Tani (Tenjin Shinyo-ryu). Later on, the Gracie family developed their own self-defense system, and published Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

BJJ eventually came to be its own defined combat sport through the innovations, practices, and adaptation of Gracie jiu-jitsu and Judo, and became an essential martial art for modern MMA. Governing bodies such as the IBJJF work worldwide, and set the rules and standards to be held in sport BJJ competitions.
