Judo

Judo - Probably the most fun you’ll have in pyjamas.

That does not mean it’s easy, Judo, despite its translation from Japanese as being the ‘Gentle Way’ is anything but!

Judo is all about taking your opponent to the ground, i.e. Throwing your opponent, with the aim being to control the throw in such a way that the opponent lands cleanly on their back, with the thrower in complete control, which in competition terms will score an ippon and end the contest.

If the throw is not successful, then the aim is to control your opponent on the ground with pins and/or submit them with chokes/strangles or arm locks.

The essence of Judo is all about using leverage and balance displacement, using the minimum amount of effort to overcome your opponent regardless of size or strength.  The skill developed is the ability to use your opponent’s strength, weight and effort against them, and it’s a very effective skill to have with many self-defense applications.

All that being said Judo is also a very safe art to study, it’s was developed so that people could practice with power but with personal safety foremost, you will learn how to fall without hurting yourself and how to throw others without injuring them.
