My name is Joe O’Neill, I am a Karate Instructor with MSK (Ma-Seirei-Kai) Martial Arts, where I have been training with the club since June 2007 after leaving secondary school. During my school life I was a very timid, nervous person who was bullied all the time and I found it very difficult to socialise with people other than my family and close friends. After my first session at the club, I almost gave up because I was so insecure about myself and my abilities. The reason I tried sticking it out was so I could change myself and it had to start with me making myself want to change.
Now I train myself as much as I can because I enjoy the physical abilities I have gained and I am always amazed of how much I can do, even when there are days that I may struggle. When we do find it hard to train or do work of any kind, those times are the best to push forward and really learn our limits. I have gained great confidence in my drawing skills that I loved as a kid, but never was really confident about, again because of my past insecurities.
My goals in teaching and training in karate have been always to improve myself, both in and outside the club, as well as help other people who may be younger or unsure about themselves gain confidence that I developed myself. This is so they can let it be a part of their well being. I absolutely love teaching fitness, sparring and kata with others and get the chance to learn new techniques when I can, because this club has helped me gain so much and I know it will help others who join us as well.
